Parasite Control
Year-round parasite protection tailored to your pet and Brisbane’s climate, made simple.
Parasite prevention for dogs and cats in Brisbane
Fleas, ticks, heartworm and intestinal worms can affect your pet’s comfort and health - and some parasites can also affect people. Brisbane’s warm climate means parasite protection should be planned year-round, not only when parasites are easy to see.
There is no single prevention schedule that is right for every dog or cat. At Ashgrove Avenue Vet, we help you choose a safe, practical plan based on your pet’s species, age, weight, health, lifestyle, travel and current products. We can also help simplify overlapping treatments so you know what is covered and when each dose is due.
Which parasites should my pet be protected against?
Paralysis ticks
Paralysis ticks can cause progressive weakness and life-threatening illness. Dogs and cats may be exposed in suburban yards, bushy areas and while travelling. Prevention is important, but no product is completely foolproof; regular tick searches and prompt veterinary attention for suspicious signs remain essential.
Seek urgent veterinary advice if your pet develops weakness, wobbliness, vomiting or retching, a change in bark or meow, or breathing difficulty.
Heartworm
Heartworm is spread by mosquitoes. The adult worms live in the heart and nearby blood vessels and can cause serious disease. Dogs require reliable ongoing prevention. Cats can also be affected, although prevention options and risk assessment differ. Speak with your vet before starting or restarting heartworm prevention if there has been a lapse, particularly for a dog.
Intestinal worms
Roundworm, hookworm, whipworm and tapeworm are among the intestinal parasites that may affect pets. Some can also pose a risk to people. The most appropriate worming interval depends on your pet’s age, diet, environment, hunting or scavenging habits and exposure to children or other animals.
Fleas
Fleas can cause intense itching, skin inflammation and flea-allergy dermatitis. Pets may also swallow fleas and acquire tapeworm. As much of the flea life cycle occurs in the environment rather than on the pet, established infestations may require consistent treatment of every pet in the household plus environmental management.
Why parasite plans become confusing
Many preventatives cover more than one parasite, but coverage and dosing intervals differ. Using multiple products without checking their active ingredients can create gaps, unnecessary overlap or safety concerns. Cats must never be given a product intended only for dogs unless a veterinarian has specifically directed its use.
Bring photos of the packaging or a list of everything you currently use. We can map out:
- which parasites are covered
- when each treatment is due
- whether your pet needs testing before a change
- how to set up reminders that fit your routine
What types of parasite prevention are available?
Parasite preventatives are available in several forms, including:
- longer-lasting chews or tablets
- more frequently administered oral treatments
- topical spot-on treatments
- injectable preventatives for eligible dogs
The duration and parasite coverage vary between products. Some options cover several parasites, while others need to be combined with a separate treatment. For example, to ensure intestinal worms are also covered.
For many eligible dogs, our veterinarians commonly recommend annual injectable options that can be used together to provide tick, flea and heartworm prevention. Having these administered at the clinic can provide peace of mind and reduce the risk of protection lapsing because a dose is forgotten or given late. Annual injectable options are not available or suitable for every pet, so your veterinarian will confirm the right combination and timing for your dog.
Cats require a different parasite-control plan. Our team can recommend suitable oral or spot-on options based on your cat’s health, lifestyle and individual risks.
